Havana (CUB)

Havana, Nicolás de Cardona, 1632, Biblioteca Nacional

Havana Bay is considered one of the safest natural shelters in the Caribbean and the Americas. Its importance is evidenced by the fact that it was known as the “Key to the New World and Antemural of the West Indies”.

Founded in its present location in 1519, its strategic importance forced the Spanish crown to establish a complex defensive system to protect the bay and its port from the attacks of pirates and corsairs.

In 1561 it was decided to concentrate the Fleet of the Indies in the Port of Havana before sailing to Spain, turning this port into a flourishing city where goods from the whole continent, including gold, silver, wool, emeralds, mahogany, hides, spices, logwood, corn, potatoes, cassava and cocoa, arrived to make a transoceanic voyage.

Given its relevance, the city grew around the port, and has maintained its importance until today.
