The Tierra Firme Fleet
The Tierra Firme galleons were in charge of connecting Spain with the Viceroyalty of Peru. From Spain, they sailed to Panama, first to Nombre de Dios Bay and then, from 1598, to Portobelo Bay. The second most important port for this fleet was the port of Cartagena de Indias.
This was a unique fleet as it brought together the merchant ships of the Tierra Firme Fleet with the escort galleons of the Armada de la Guarda of the Carrera de Indias, a squadron destined to protect the merchant ships in the Atlantic. This combination was known as the Tierra Firme Galleons.
