Álvaro Flores de Quiñones

Álvaro Flores de Quiñones was an Asturian-born soldier and sailor (1544?-1591). He served in the Royal Navy, and held the position of captain general of the fleets of the Indies since 1574.

In 1586, after learning that Sir Francis Drake had plundered some Spanish cities such as Santo Domingo and St. Augustine, capital of Florida, he set out in search of him with a fleet of 21 ships and 3,000 men, but it was to no avail, as he had already fled to England.

In 1589, sailing as captain of the fleet on the return voyage to Spain, he lost at least five ships in the Old Bahama Channel.
