Bartolomé Carreño
Bartolomé Carreño (1503-1568) was a sailor, admiral and captain general of the Nueva España and Tierra Firme Fleets. He dedicated a good part of his career to exploring the islands of the Caribbean Sea and defending them from the attacks of cannibal Indians.
He was the first to recognize the island of Bermuda, and following the Emperor’s orders, made a detailed description of the island. From his testimony we learned that he made more than 33 round trips following the West Indies Trade Route.
During the more than 50 years he spent sailing and visiting fleets and navies, he experienced many changing fortunes.
