Hernando Escalante Fontaneda

Hernando Escalante Fontaneda (1535-1575) survived a shipwreck, and was the only one who remained alive after being captured by the Calusa Indians. He lived with the Indians for 17 years until he was rescued by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, to whom he served as interpreter.

His account of the ways of life of the ancient tribes of Florida is particularly noteworthy, and can be found in his Memoria de las cosas y costa e indios de la Florida (Memoir of the things, the shore and the Indians of Florida).
